Switching it up.

Three years of soiling the internet. Lately I have not done any recent drawings or postings. I am going to try to change that here pretty soon and start blogging more frequently. There are some changes coming soon. I have created another blog for the Secret Comix project called "Intellectual Improprieties" http://intellectualimproprieties.blogspot.com/ This will be the new comic book I am hoping to get launched with writer Eric Haxer. So I hope things will start moving along soon. I have also switched by web counter from "Statcounter" http://www.statcounter.com/ to "Sitemeter" http://www.sitemeter.com/ I think my old counter was around 30,000 for three years, a big thanks to everybody who visited! I hope to have more posts soon and I hope you come back to visit as well!

Censor Boy aka Sensor Boy

Censor Boy aka Sensor Boy is chronically sick all the time, and has contracted virtually every disease known in the modern world and still is surviving. He is a "fluke" one in a billion patient that has the doctors baffled why he is still alive. Attention-Deficit-Disorder (ADD, ADHD) is the least of Censor Boy's worries. Swine flu and bird flu was his latest sickness. Medication and injections keeps this kid going and going! (edit: fixed his eyes and shirt in photoshop)

Captain Gayford "Mudd" Snarfinkillinski

Captain Gayford "Mudd" Snarfinkillinski is a retired U.S. Naval Captain from World War II. He was awarded various medals and honors for his duties serving his country. He now enjoys driving a school bus during the school year and driving taxi's in the off season. "Mudd" has many great stories about the war, from what he recalls, despite the metal plate in his head. Ask him anything and he has a story, just don't ask him where he got the nickname "Mudd" from. You can usually find the Captain at the local pub called "Scullies Tavern".

Here is a little car drawing. I was thinking of a gangster in a getaway car or a rich guy driving really fast! This is an example of one of my ballpoint pen doodles on copier paper that just keeps getting built up with markers and colored pencils. I'm not sure if I like it, but it is a start, just to get a feel for the shapes and the design. The technique is to just put down on paper with a ballpoint pen the idea and work the technical stuff out later.

Extreme expressions, this is funny, they all frightened each other. My friend Walter had this funny story about how he adopted his cat. Walter was taking his dog for a walk on a spooky night, when a cat fell out of a tree and scared him and his dog half to death!

Furniture Designs

I found some old student furniture designs I created back in the "old" days. The chair is black-lacquered wood with iron rods. The shelf is made from birch and the base is polished granite. The idea is that these products come in a small, flat, box and are easily assembled by the consumer.

30 seconds of funny?

I happened to read on someone's blog the other day that CARTOONS are supposed be FUNNY. Comics and cartoons are supposed to have funny looking characters doing funny stupid things. I could not agree more. I think anime and manga changed that. When I was a kid, "Kimba" and "Speed Racer" were generally not funny at all. I have yet to see any anime with good humor. Maybe I'm wrong? I watched Saturday morning cartoons as a kid, like Looney Tunes, Ren & Stimpy, Scooby Doo, and even Super Friends had some funny. What happened to the funny? I see cartoons and comics today and i ask myself: "Where's the funny?"

My friend wanted to fight a traffic ticket, so I brought my sketchbook into the courtroom. The girl drawn here was lectured by the judge about her "inproper attire" in a court of law. The guy drawn here was caught not wearing a seatbelt and was trying to explain why he was not wearing it. The guy also said "people on motorcycles and busses don't have to wear a seat belt." They both got tickets, and my friend too, everyone lost and had to pay fines.

As I draw similiar things, the drawings seem to get easier and somewhat better. Most recent is on top, first drawings are on the bottom, all drawn whithin an hour.

Why are Tiki's so popular and trendy lately? What is it about these little statues? I love them too! This is the first drawing in my sketchbook of observations of various types of tiki's. Drawing things that are trendy and already existing are essential for industrial design. By drawing, you are OBSERVING and STUDYING. This is not meant to be a polished and refined drawing at all. The idea is to understand the shapes in three-dimensions, even though theses are from photo's. Writing notes even though they are obvious help keep thoughts recorded. For study purposes, I would typically draw a many sheets like this as possible (like 10-20). Try it! Find some photo's of tiki's and draw them. I use www.flickr.com to find photos to draw from if the real thing is not available.

New Sketchbook! Page #1

I like this new sketchbook, 8" x 10" spiral bound, the paper is thick and has some texture and teeth to it. It says "Cachet select" on it. The markers don't totally bleed through the pages, but I still put scrap paper in between during the marker process. The colored pencils take pretty good, layering and blending work good. This paper is good, I wish I could find it in color.
